St. Lucia is not the easiest sell. It’s closer to Venezuela than Florida and about five hours from New York City on a nonstop; eight or more with a change of planes. Once there you learn that the island’s infrastructure is rough: The main north-south roads are mostly narrow two-laners. The former has no beach of its own, and the one belonging to the latter is never going to make a World’s Best list (or even a World’s Second Best list). The draw at both is plenty of privacy, the hotel room as aerie, and a gorgeous view of the island’s iconic symbol, the Pitons, twin pointy peaks off the southwest coast that have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
